Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS)Β Ross GreeneΒ – Author of ‘The Explosive Child’
Two major tenants
kids lack the skills to respond adaptablely
the best way to reduce concerning behaviour is to solve the problem that is causing the problem.
Three Plans
Plan A – What has always been done – adult-imposed solutions to behaviour management/problems. (ie: pulling kid out of parking lot)
Plan B – Collaborating with student to find the underlying unsolved problem that is being communicated through behaviour and work together towards a solution.
Plan C – Purposefully set aside the expectation for the behaviour for an unmet expectation (ie: permit sleeping in class)
Three ingredients
The Empathy step – gather the information from the student. Without it, you cannot understand what is making it hard to meet the expectation (unsolved problem).
The Define Adult Concerns step – add in the adult concerns to be considered on the same unsolved problem.
The Invitation Step – collaborate to find a realistic and mutually satisfactory solution for both the adults and the student.
