Another resource that I want to remember!
In the Education Research Reading Room’s Podcast Episode #062, Margaret McKeown promotes one of her favourite dictionary sources: www.onelook.com
It is an amalgamation of almost all online dictionary sources in one place and a great place to help students discover the meaning of a word in a particular context.
Students can enter words in a variety of methods to either look for definitions as well as similar and related words.
Definitions are given by subject matter and have the source noted. This allows students a whole picture of any given word in different contexts. McKeown explains the benefit of this arises out of dictionary writers only being allotted a small amount of space to write definitions for each word, and therefore, each dictionary has its own narrow view of a word. By combining several dictionary definitions, the true meaning of a word in its context can become apparent.
